My interview with Cory Doctorow
The Enshittification of Everything (including digital media)
I wanted to share a few clips from my interview with author & activist Cory Doctorow for the Monopoly Report Podcast. You can listen to the entire interview at https://www.monopolyreportpod.com/episode-54-the-enshittification-of-everything-including-digital-media/.
And before I forget, Cory’s book Enshittification: Why Everything Suddenly Got Worse and What to Do About It is MUST READ for anyone in digital media circles.
In this clip In this segment, Cory opines on the use of dark patterns in the most charming way possible. “That does’t make you a wizard...” One thing that neither of us considered is that EVERY tech engineer considers themselves a wizard (and probably has a college friend nicknamed Gandalf). But I digress….
In this clip, Cory opens on the growth of the global antitrust movement. I find myself a bit less optimistic in that area than I was just a few months ago.
In this final clip, we start off talking about the private right of action and end with Cory opining on the risks around data collection. Overall, it’s a good synopsis of one of the key divides as between the business community and the advocacy community.
Overall, I thought it was an engaging discussion. And 50+ plus episodes into the Monopoly Report podcast, I am grateful to be able to bring on so many smart people who often disagree with me.
On that note, I’m looking forward to having Alan Butler from EPIC on the Monopoly Report podcast where we discuss EPIC’s recent blog post on Apple’s European antitrust woes re: ATT. Can’t wait!
